Salzmann’s nodular degeneration (SND) is a degenerative disorder of the cornea. Gray white to bluish nodules composed of scar like tissue form beneath the surface layer of the cornea.
SND Symptoms
Patients with SND may experience a gradual decline in visual acuity as well as tearing, foreign body sensation, and light sensitivity. Vision deteriorates as the corneal surface becomes more irregular resulting in increasing amounts of astigmatism.
SND Treatment
Superficial keratectomy may be performed with or without amniotic membrane transplant to remove Salzmann’s nodules. This restores a more regular cornea surface leading to improved vision. Salzmann’s nodules may recur over time and may require additional treatment.
