What to Expect After Cataract Surgery
Receiving the news that cataract surgery is needed can put a person into a panic. “How long will I be laid up?” “When will I regain my vision?” “How long until I can drive again?”
We have great news. The procedure has improved, over the years, by leaps and bounds. Your recovery is minimal!
Cataract surgery actually only takes about 15 minutes, typically under “twilight sedation”, meaning that you are awake but mostly unaware of what is happening. Most people can resume normal activities, including driving, by the next day. Most patients notice an improvement in vision right away, although improvement continues for several days to several weeks. Discomfort is typically limited to a feeling like there is an eyelash in the eye or a gritty sensation that may persist for a day or two. You can expect to be on eye drops for four weeks after surgery, but that’s about it. Before you know it, you’ll be ready to have your second eye taken care of!
