Regular eye examinations are an important part of general health maintenance. Too often, people put off having eye exams because their vision seems satisfactory, not knowing that in doing so they are putting their vision and health at risk. The eye is truly the window to one’s body since changes in the retinal blood vessels can indicate other medical problems such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and hypertension.
There are many components to a comprehensive eye examination at Milwaukee Eye Care. We begin with obtaining a complete medical and ocular history, including family history of pertinent diseases. This includes information about current medications being taken and drug allergies. Bringing a list of medications with you to your exam is often helpful. Questions are then asked to determine the main reason for the visit and to document additional concerns you have about the problems you are experiencing.
The vision testing includes measurements of the vision both with and without eyeglasses or contact lenses, peripheral vision check, color vision screening when appropriate, and a measurement called a refraction, which determines the eye’s best visual acuity by finding the best possible eyeglass prescription. A test of the muscles that control the position of the eyes and their movement is performed as well as a simple yet highly valuable test of pupillary reaction which can detect problems in the brain which affect the eyes.
Glaucoma screening is done with a gentle instrument that measures the pressure inside the eye. Following this, the pupils are dilated with drops. Next, an examination of the eyelids, conjunctiva, cornea, front chamber of the eye and iris is performed. After dilation of the pupils, the lens, vitreous gel in the back chamber of the eye, retina (the nerve tissue lining the inside of the eye) and optic nerve are carefully examined.
The eye care professionals at Milwaukee Eye Care provide thorough, comprehensive eye exams and will take the time to explain your diagnoses and discuss your treatment options with you. To schedule an appointment, call 414-271-2020.
Imagine being a child who has difficulty seeing a chalkboard, reading a book, writing, participating in sports, or any other normal childhood activity. Going through life with a vision problem can be very frustrating, especially if no one knows about it. Quite often, children have vision problems of which they themselves are not even aware; they only know that they are"not good at" certain tasks, like reading, writing, or sports. For many of these children, the solution to these challenges is often as simple as a comprehensive eye exam by an eye doctor.
An estimated 10 to 15% of school-aged children in the United States suffer from an undetected vision impairment, according to the American Foundation for Vision Awareness statistics. Most pre-school and school vision screenings are designed to detect only the most obvious vision problems, so many childhood vision ailments go undiagnosed. A child with vision problems may squint, complain of headaches, or may not complain at all. The child may simply avoid tasks that are visually challenging. Too often, children with vision-related learning problems are misidentified as having social or behavioral problems or even learning disorders.
When your child's eyes are examined by one of the eye care professionals at Milwaukee Eye Care, a complete vision and eye health examination will be performed. The need for eyeglasses will be evaluated, and your child's depth perception and ability to coordinate the efforts of the two eyes will be assessed. Your child's eyes will be dilated and examined thoroughly for the presence of any ocular disease.
Every Milwaukee Eye Care location has an optical department staffed with opticians who are knowledgeable about the special needs of children. Our Brookfield optical offers a wide variety of children's frames and specialty lenses. We also offer complete contact lens services if contact lens wear is desired and is appropriate for your child.
